As this raw diet, raw keto diet has gone on, I’ve noticed something surprising: strong cravings for fermented foods.
Not random cravings either. Very specific.
Kimchi. Pickles. Even mustard (if you count that).
And when I say craving, I mean it: these jars go fast. Empty. Done.
I’ve been pairing them with lots of avocado, and it hits the spot immediately.
So what is this craving coming from?
1) B Vitamins Can Drive the Craving
One big reason is B vitamins.
When we’re not eating meat, the body can start signaling more strongly for foods that support B vitamin intake and metabolism. I’ve seen this pattern before.
In the past, when I added spirulina (which contains B vitamins), it really alleviated the cravings.
So if you’re on raw keto and suddenly want fermented foods nonstop, this may be your body nudging you toward B vitamin support.
2) Fermented Foods Give a Real Digestive Lift
The other big effect I’m noticing is a genuine uptick in digestion after fermented foods.
That quick lift makes a lot of sense because fermented foods contain probiotics, which can help support the gut ecosystem, especially when you’re eating a lot of raw plant fiber and fats.
3) Microbiome Reset: A Clean Rebuild
There’s also something deeper happening here.
Fermented foods can help the microbiome reset, especially if we’re coming from periods of eating foods that were:
non-raw
non-organic
processed or inconsistent
In a raw diet context, the gut is adapting. Fermented foods can be one of the most direct tools to support that transition.
The Takeaway
If you’re craving fermented foods on raw keto, it may be because your body is looking for:
B vitamin support
Probiotics for stronger digestion
A microbiome reset while transitioning to cleaner raw foods
And honestly, once you feel how quickly your system responds, the craving makes sense
